How many directions are there?

Few said there are 4 directions, few said 8 directions and some said 16 directions. Actually each of these 16 directions were divided into 2 directions, which means there are a total of 32 directions in which the vastu principle works. Vastu shastra experts take into consideration all of these 32 directions while implementing solutions in a living space. Out of 32 directions 8 directions are main.

The 8 directions are as follows:

North East (Ishan Kon)

East (Poorva Disha)

South East (Agneya Kon)

South (Dakshin Disha)

South West (Nairutya Kon)

North West (Vayavya Kon)

North Direction (Uttar Disha)

Significance of 8 directions:

North East (Ishan Kon): This direction is known for meditation, peace and a place for having a puja room in the house. A defect in this direction specially washroom and kitchen will affect an occupant health wise and in many other aspects. This direction must have a source for ample light and natural air movement for balancing the environment of the space.

East (Poorva Disha): Sun rises from this direction. And it is the source of life and energy. This direction in the house must have an opening for sunlight. It is important because it removes all the negativity from the home and also disinfects the environment. This direction is ruled by Lord Indra who bestows wealth and pleasures in life. If a mirror is placed in this direction it will double prosperity and enhance victory. Defect in this direction may affect one’s growth and prosperity.

South East (Agneya Kon): This is the zone of fire so it is ideal to have a kitchen in this direction but while cooking once face be towards the East. This direction is ruled by Planet Venus who gives wealth, prosperity and fame. This direction determines Strength and determination. Defects in this direction can affect one’s financial status and fame.

South (Dakshin Disha): This direction is ruled by Yam who is known for justice. This direction is ideal to have photos of the persons who are not alive. We don’t place photos of live persons or clocks in these directions. And this direction must be a little up from the rest of the direction. This direction should always be loaded and heavy as compared to other directions.

South West (Nairutya Kon): This direction is ruled by planet Rahu (North node). Having entrance in this direction is inauspicious, it brings bad luck and misfortune. Washroom or kitchen in direction is also inauspicious. In this direction something heavy must be kept to reduce the negativity. It is ideal for the bedroom of a newly married couple. West (Paschim Disha): This direction is ruled by Lord Varun. Saturn is the ruling planet in this direction. And it is also the direction of Pushpdant – The lord who makes your wish come true. Big opening in this direction can affect the occupant. But having Garage and overhead tank can be beneficial in this direction. If the entrance door in this direction is also auspicious, it attracts abundance for the occupants.

North West (Vayavya Kon): This direction is ruled by Lord Vayu, who bestows good health. Having a door and window in this direction is auspicious. The Moon is the planet in this direction.

North Direction (Uttar Disha): This direction is ruled by Lord Kuber, he is the treasurer. Keeping treasure in this direction facing towards the North will attract money. Having entrance in this direction will attract abundance and opportunities. The Mercury planet ruled in this direction. Having water bodies in this direction is auspicious and will provide financial growth. Keep this direction open and lighter than other directions. Having a washroom or kitchen in this direction can affect the financial status of the occupants.
